Job Summary

The ED Coder will ensure proper ICD-10-CM and CPT code assignment for diagnoses and procedures indicated in the Emergency Department medical record for the purpose of comprehensive statistical reporting to accurately reflect the care of the patient.  Accurate, timely and complete code assignments is required for proper reimbursement of both technical and professional components. Reports to the Coding Manager.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency with utilizing Work Queues in Epic for efficient workload management.
  • Thoroughly review patient documentation in Epic by reading direct entry documentation and scanned documents when necessary to identify all appropriate diagnoses and procedures for an individual Emergency Department visit.
  • Demonstrate proficiency using the encoder for accurate, timely and complete assignment of ICD-10-CM and CPT codes.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in reviewing charts for complete charge entry.
  • Assist with coding turn-around times to keep the workload within required expectations.
  • Work in other Work Queues as assigned.
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards related to coding and patient confidentiality.
  • Support the team in achieving goals and objectives.

 

Skills and Experience

  • 2 years of coding in an acute hospital setting preferred.
  • Epic experience required.

 

 

 

Education/Certifications

Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered Health Information Tech (RHIT) with at least one year of experience as a Coder in a Health Information Services Department in an acute care facility.

High school diploma or GED required, with two years’ experience in a Health Information Services Department as a Coder and attendance at an approved medical record coding seminar.
